What is Project Management?

From the Project Management Institute (PMI) :

Project management uses specific knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to deliver something of value to people. The development of software for an improved business process, the construction of a building, the relief effort after a natural disaster, and the expansion of sales into a new geographic market—are all examples of projects.  https://www.pmi.org/about/learn-about-pmi/what-is-project-management

What is a Project?

PMI defines projects as temporary, with a clear start and end.  An example of a project can be the building of a house and the development of an application.  In the end, a house needs to be turned over to an owner who is expecting quality and timely delivery.  The house is not just built without proper planning and alignment of resources (people, equipment, funding).  The same applies to an application or any other project around your home.  What a project is not is a recurring task that you perform daily, like making coffee, following up with customers, or anything that is continuous in nature.

Who is a Project Manager Professional (PMP)?

Project managers are organized, goal-oriented professionals who use passion, creativity, and collaboration to design projects that are destined for success, according to PMI.org.

PMPs are people who not only have the training but also have the experience leading projects.  A PMP recognizes that if a project is not moving that is up to him/her to get it moving.

Project Managers integrate activities to make sure they are aligned and that there is no one stepping over each other.  For example, using the house example, there is no point of having carpenters on the ground when the foundation of the house has not been built.

What is the outlook for PMPs?

Project Managers are in high demand.  According to PMI:  "Research indicates that employers will need to fill nearly 2.3 million new project-oriented roles each year through 2030. This means skilled project managers are in high demand. PMP certification is designed by project professionals, for project professionals, and validates that you are among the best."
